On the delightful subject of toilet paper, that is bathroom paper to you Americans, my wife has just paid extra for paper that smells of 'ironed linen.'
Why?
would you use the handicap stall that is big and roomy ... even if other smaller stalls were available?.

I use any stall that is available. If they are separate stalls and the men's is in use I use the women's. I have even encouraged waiting women into the men's but I best not go into that!
If I do use the handicap stall I limp heavily as I leave - just in case.
this leaves ugly women as the most unlikely to find partners.. please discuss..
I am often surprised how mismatched some couples are in the looks department.
But how good do many western women look first thing in the morning without their make up? Ooh!
minimus got me thinking with his thread about whether or not you know anyone that committed suicide.
i think it might be interesting to see what the opinions are.. what do you think?.
are there cases where it is understandable?
The question this thread asks is if suicide is wrong. I do not believe it is wrong. To be selfish means to put our need above the need of another. If someone wants us to live and we chose to die, then we are putting our need above theirs, hence we are being selfish. Our pain will end while causing great pain to others left behind.
But it is not wrong, in my book, to be selfish. I said earlier: "Suicide is a selfish act but then continuing to fight for survival on an over crowded planet could be considered selfish."
I don't blame people for being selfish in the way they live or the way they die. The only creatures left alive on earth are the creatures and species who were the most successful in being selfish, so they survived while other perished and often got eaten.
what god could have done to show himself:.
he could have left incontrovertible evidence of his existence.he could have made it impossibly evident that mankind has been here only 6000 years, not the 200,000 give or take, that fossil evidence supports.
he could have provided evidence through jesus to millions of non-believers, instead of focusing on a small band of fanatical followers eager to point to 'the messiah'.he could at any time, being the ultimate of beings, just simply show himself in the sky, speak to millions instead of to the lonely occasional deluded sheepherder in the desert, or provide miracles to millions of us as observers - part the ocean, cure cancer and announce it from heaven in a clear unmistakable voice, or instantaneously stop starvation and plague in it's tracks.
Yes Jeff, you are understandable angry that you spent so many years believing in something that you no longer do. Many people feel a similar sense of betrayal and loss after a divorce. Losing our religion has many similarities.
The thing is, the past is gone and all we have is now. To enjoy now we have to let go of yesterday's pain, anger, frustration and loss. I too have allowed myself to become angry at people who have the comfort of religion while my mind will not allow me the luxury. But, as you say, "They sacrifice entire lives in the service of a god that is no more provable than the invisible dog."
I am no longer envious of other peoples faith. If that's what they need to make sense of their lives, then so be it. I am just glad to be free of living a delude life - being a gladiator helps. I respect people who live by faith but life for me, is more real without it.
Only if I can be Russell Crowe, though I would settle for being Brad Pitt - minus Angelina Jolie.
No seriously - I am serious. As serious as a disenfranchised gladiator can be!

Oh dear Jeff - you have opened up a can of spiritual worms with this one.
There are as many gods as you want there to be, or as few, one, or none. It is all in the mind. I personally keep my gods on a CD - it frees up my mind for carnal matters.
God is there for those that want to believe he is there and if it comforts them or fills a need or emptiness inside, then good luck to them. I would personally rather wrestle with a tiger than a god, but then that's my trade.
Faith is the essential mental requirement, even the bible gets that bit right. For me, if it doesn't bark and wag its tail it is not a god, sorry dog, unless it is Outlaw!
May Aphrodite, Dyonysos and Jupiter bless you and protect you from pagans.
some posters seem to have the art of diplomacy-.
i re-read my previouse posts and felt i was less than diplomatic with terry-(i do admire his ability to reply without offence).
so do you need to be a tough minded, and insensitive to survive on discussion boards?.
The difficulty with being polite, kind and reasonable all the time is that such posters turn a sort of beige color and get ignored. The posters that are controversial get the most attention.
I posted here for many years under my real name but found being myself boring as did most other posters! For this and other reasons I resurrected my old identity of the gladiator.
I admire people who post as themselves but I would not do it again. There is something liberating about adopting a new persona. My style of posting at times tends to invite insults, which I expect. They are aimed at the gladiator an ancient Roman nutter, not me personally. I don't take abuse too seriously and have more fun.
May your gods go with you - Hail Cesar!

Suicide is taking the life of someone who may be dear to others. In such a case the pain and shock can cause great suffering to those who were close and are left behind. I have known a number of suicides over the years and the loss to the parents is inestimable. Also a father who takes his own life often leaves behind a wife and children who have to live with their loss.
But as I said above: "Suicide causes a great deal of pain for loved ones left behind but often the person wanting to end their life is in too much emotional pain to consider the pain of others, or they have no loved ones."
thread for nasticanasta to have at with proof that it does..

What sort of god stands by and allows a man like Hitler to kill millions of people, then waits for him to die and then tortures him for eternity as a punishment.
Why grant Hitler everlasting life just so he can suffer. And bearing in mind that according to the bible god said the nation of Israel would be slaughtered at the fall of Jerusalem and become homeless and persecuted, perhaps Hitler was just carrying out your god's purpose?
The only logical conclusion is that we are on our own on this hostile planet, for better or for worse. There are much more informative books accessing the human condition than that collection of mumblings you call 'the bible.'
